Don’t tell others about your goal setting!

Our goal setting is supposed to gain more power if we write our goals down. And it is conventional wisdom that, if we tell someone else we are further motivated to achieve them. However, “Entrepreneur, programmer, avid student of life” Derek Sivers suggests that nearly a century of psychological research shows it is better to keep your goals to yourself.

Carl Sagan on our Place in the Scheme of Things

Here’s a video about our place in the cosmos, and how we need to protect it and live more consciously of its – and our – fragility.

The key image was taken by Voyager 1 on 14 February 1990, just as it was starting to move into the outer limits of our Solar System. The spacecraft was turned around to capture one last view of an Earth, at that point in the odyssey, appearing to be less than the size of a pixel.

The commentary is by astronomer Carl Sagan (1934-1996), and was the epilogue of his revolutionary TV series about astronomy Cosmos:

Makes you wonder why we never seem to learn, doesn’t it.

Alan Watts talks about “waking up”

Philosopher Alan Watts talks in this video about how we are all part of God, but that we hide this from ourselves in a kind of sleep. This can lead to our tendency to see ourselves as a victim, and that we create the barriers in our own lives to “waking up” to a new way of seeing the world. He also talks about the role of real gurus in playing a devil’s advocate to our delusions.
